Mind Mapping… for some people it is a method for getting in their creative state of mind.

Most other people simply want to create overviews of information.

What I’ve seen is that many people try to create a really good picture. It has to be stimulating for their brain. After all, isn’t that what a mindmap should do: Create a picture of information which is easy for your brain to work with

For me, that is probably the last things a mindmap has to do. Here’s why…

Whenever you are looking for great ideas, new insights or you are just looking for answers, you should consider using a mindmap for getting results. Of course there are other forms of visual mapping you could consider as well. Let’s focus on the mindmap today. I’m confident you can apply these thoughts on different mapping methods as well.

There are two things you have to consider when you are capturing and overviewing your thoughts. Here they are.

Master mindmaps on paper are usually maps which show you lots of information on a certain topic. It can be very good to have an overview of all the information in a map. However…

When you create a master mindmap the information can become too scattered. You lose track and you lose the overview.

The master map becomes an overview of many pieces of information which is not easy to read and use.

When people use a mindmap, they do this (hopefully) for a reason. They need to overview and clarify (a lot of) information for themselves or others which they have in their head, books, etc. A mindmap is a good tool to use in that situation. Most people grab a piece of paper or start up their computer and begin working.

After the mindmap is created and you organized the information correctly, the map:

  1. helps you remember the information better,
  2. gives you insight in the information

That’s all wonderful of course, only I see one small problem that you need to be aware of…

You are interested in mind mapping and the use of it. It may be that you’ve seen articles about the direction or trends in mind mapping this year or before. Some even propose that mind mapping can even move into ‘main stream’ this year.

I believe mind mapping is still not really where it should be. In fact… evidence supports this. Have a look with me.

To investigate the growth of mind mapping, I used Google trends. It may be safe to assume that the more people search on mindmap related keywords, the more people are interested.
Sure, when we all know how to mindmap we don’t need to google on the keyword, but that’s not the case yet.

Google allows us to go back until 2004. I examined the keyword: MINDMAP, MIND MAPPING, MINDMAPPING.

Do you think the number of searches has grown from 2004 till now for these words?

OK, by now I hope you started to use your mindmaps (a little bit more).

As you know, your mindmap will be serving as your personal or professional assistant. I prefer to view my mindmaps as my personal assistants, even when used in a business environment.

The reason for this view is simple: Most of my mindmap are showing my interpretation of a certain topic. It doesn’t matter if this is a personal, academic or business situation or topic. It is my personal view which is expressed via the map. Therefore, I consider most of my mindmaps as personal assistants.

OK, you have this mindmap which helps you. You ‘feed’ it with information. You manage the content.

BUT…
