In the previous post, we discussed how you can use a mindmap to create a good overview of your foreign words.

Today, I want to take this one step further. Understand this second part discusses something I am experimenting with right now. So things may seem strange or perhaps even incorrect. I am no language expert. I only know mind mapping :) .

Using a mindmap is great when studying. Before I used the mindmap in my own studies, I always wondered about one thing:

How can this overview of words in a mindmap assist me in studying?

Ever since I was young I am intrigued by the different languages we speak. I thought it would be great to be able to speak a different language. That is… until I had to learn how to speak French and German in school. Let’s just say I was not really good at it…

For the next years, this hold me back in learning any new language. I thought I just couldn’t learn any new language. Yes, I know, limiting beliefs can be really holding you back.

The thought of learning a new language popped up every once in a while. A few weeks ago, I enrolled in a training which should help you in speaking a rudimentary form of any language in a matter of about 2 months.

I often receive the following question from parents looking into mind mapping for their children:

Can my children learn how to create mindmaps?

This is a question which is not that easy to answer, it depends on the child. Sure, people of many ages can create mindmaps. I do think you need to have a certain overview in information and developed mind before you can create an effective mindmap.

We can all doodle words and images on paper, yet this is not what equals the creation of an effective mindmap. Mind Mapping is a well defined system in stead of the creation of just a visual overview.

I was well in my twenties before I started to create ‘genuine’ of ‘official’ mindmaps. Before that, I always created visual overviews of information. Small drawings with lines, images and words. This was done on a ‘feel good’ basis, not really using a proven system.

In the Mindmap Circles series, we enter the second circle.

In the previous article we discussed that most people start their lives as natural visual thinkers and visual mappers. After that, they learn how to think in a more linear format by using written words in their communications.

Especially in the Western world, we have to think in (linear) processes. I personally believe that people from for example Asia are much more holistic thinkers. They understand much better that everything is Part of the Whole and both the Whole as well as the Part interact with each other.

At the end, most people consciously or unconsciously integrate both the linear as well as the non-linear methods in their life.

Today, we look at the different stages of using visual mapping, mind mapping, summapping, etc. This all has to do with the mindset people have for using these techniques.

Most people feel that mind mapping is a familiar way of working, even when they first encounter it. I would like to tell you more about this today. We take a close look at mind mapping and you will learn that mind mapping is a lot less ’special’ than the ‘normal’ methods of writing we use today.

I love to spend time with my nephew who is 8 years young now. It is amazing to see kids develop and go through the different stages of understanding life and their environment. Let’s have a look at the way he handles his thoughts, ideas and stories.

When he was really young he started creating pictures and telling stories which supported his drawings. He didn’t have a need to use words. All the drawings he made meant something to him.

Then that dreadful day… (dramatic pause)
