There are a huge number of really interesting, powerful, nice and handy mindmap software solutions. This can be a bliss, but also a burden. Today I want to tell you why this diversity might be exactly what we are looking for in our software solutions.
Last week I saw I huge overview of mindmap tools on a website. Of course I already knew there are many, many tools you can use. In 2002 I created a website that offered about 25 different mindmap brands to people looking for a nice tool. Yes, that’s right, 25 brands, not different versions.
As you can probably understand, that was a lot of work to keep updated and to learn about each tool. While I could find a nearly perfect tool for a person who wanted to do something special with a tool, I thought this had to change.

OK, by now I hope you started to use your mindmaps (a little bit more).
As you know, your mindmap will be serving as your personal or professional assistant. I prefer to view my mindmaps as my personal assistants, even when used in a business environment.
The reason for this view is simple: Most of my mindmap are showing my interpretation of a certain topic. It doesn’t matter if this is a personal, academic or business situation or topic. It is my personal view which is expressed via the map. Therefore, I consider most of my mindmaps as personal assistants.
OK, you have this mindmap which helps you. You ‘feed’ it with information. You manage the content.
BUT…

Mind Mapping is a technique which gives you a visual overview on a certain topic.
Today I would like to share with you thoughts on the top 5 how you should not practice mind mapping. Hopefully this makes sure that you won’t make these mistakes ever again and we can move forward to using mindmaps
Here they are:

It is called mind mapping. People tried them as mind maps. But are they really that what they seem to be?
A few years ago, I wrote together with Wallace Tait the “Visual Mapping: A Systematic Framework for Business Improvement” e-book (interested in this e-book? Send me a message and I send you a copy).
One of the thoughts behind that book was that computer mindmaps are not mindmaps in the traditional sense of the word. It is better to call a computer mindmap a visual map.

Will You Leave The Safe And Familiar Pond?
Today I returned home riding my bike. On my way, I passed a pond. I watched the birds in this pond often. Since it is spring time, there are many birds nesting and raising their children.
This particular pond I passed is not that pretty. Actually, because of the houses they are building near by, the pond is quite dirty. The water at some places even has a coating of oil and waste. Not a good environment to raise your children (just my thought).
The amazing thing is that there are 2 couples in the pond, a couple of ducks and a couple of swans. I feel especially bad for the swans. Their nice white necks go deep into the water to find food. Even though their swim in dirty water, they remain to be white!
Here’s what I don’t understand.

I once read a quotation of Bruce Lee. He said he emphasized on the style of no style.
Later on I saw a movie which had a young student of kung fu. He said he wanted to master the art of fighting, without knowing how to fight! When he said that, his master looked at him and shook his head…
Lets stop right here. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could fight without knowing how to fight?
We should bring this into our own life and our mindmaps. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could use mindmaps without knowing how to create mindmaps???
Think about that for a moment.
You would be able to use mindmaps like a pro yet you would not have to spend time learning how to create them!
You would benefit from visual mapping while not knowing how to map your thoughts and information!
I believe that is exactly what we need.
The moment your eyes are opened, you agree with me that you don’t want to create mindmaps. You may not even want to use them. You just want the result or benefit you get from using them.
If I could give you a mindmap with the information you gave me, organized and outlined, ready to be used by you: WOULD YOU LIKE THAT? (so you wouldn’t have to create the map!)
Of course you would. You would be able to implement the knowledge from the map and move forward.
That’s what I want to teach people: Knowing how to USE visual thinking without being bound by rules to CREATE visualmaps.
