improve your map

Whenever you are looking for great ideas, new insights or you are just looking for answers, you should consider using a mindmap for getting results. Of course there are other forms of visual mapping you could consider as well. Let’s focus on the mindmap today. I’m confident you can apply these thoughts on different mapping methods as well.

There are two things you have to consider when you are capturing and overviewing your thoughts. Here they are.

As you probably know, the traditional mindmap should be created using lots of colors. Use at least 3 to 5 different colors.

The centre of the mindmap is especially important. Tony Buzan writes in his books that the centre needs special attention. You should at least:

  1. create an image of your topic
  2. use 3 to 5 colors to draw the image in the centre

A question

My question for you is: Do you do this as well?

When people use a mindmap, they do this (hopefully) for a reason. They need to overview and clarify (a lot of) information for themselves or others which they have in their head, books, etc. A mindmap is a good tool to use in that situation. Most people grab a piece of paper or start up their computer and begin working.

After the mindmap is created and you organized the information correctly, the map:

  1. helps you remember the information better,
  2. gives you insight in the information

That’s all wonderful of course, only I see one small problem that you need to be aware of…

Using your mindmaps is more than just creating mindmaps

You probably know that most people won’t go the extra mile (although there are hardly any traffic jams there :) ).

Unleashing your mindmaps goes miles beyond just creating and using mindmaps. The moment you unleash your maps, you are managing your information on a whole different level than before.

Let me explain this.

As you know, I am opening a membership training program soon. Next week, you will learn more about that special program.

The topic of the first private training in that membership will be unleashing your mindmaps to become more focused.

Here’s a short test

Right now, take any of the mindmaps you created. This could be one on paper but also on your computer. Have a look your mindmap. Answer me this question:

Our mind plays very interesting tricks with us. Today I want to discuss with you things like unconscious expressions, looking but not seeing and mindmaps. Just keep on reading. It may not seem to connect at first, but all will be well in the end :) .

Maybe you’ve seen the TV series “lie to me”. It is based upon the works of Dr. Paul Ekman.

Dr. Ekman studied the facial expressions of people and saw that the way we express for example happiness, sadness and anger is the same all around the world. He also created the term micro expressions. These are expressions we unconsciously show for a very short period of time. You could say these express what we consciously don’t want to reveal. I think it also shows what our unconscious knows/feels.

The way we unconsciously express our (true) feelings is something which fascinates me. I believe we can and need to benefit from this.

Very interesting stuff you should have a look at.

The goal of this website is not making you work to create mindmaps. You and I are interested in letting our mindmaps work for us. Still, in order to get them to work for you, you may have to spend some time familiarizing yourself with the basic process of mind mapping. That’s why I created this practical tutorial.

I will not discuss things like the orientation of your paper, details of creating branches, images & words, why the mindmap is so nice for your brain, and the numbers of colors you can/should/must use. All of this is discussed and explained in my e-book and by other people as well.

Having said that, here we go! Let’s have a look at the Process of Mind Mapping.
