improve your map

Please read first and then create your own opinion then. I believe we need to change the world of mind mapping and you and I are able to do this. Here’s why I write this and what we have to do:

Have you been listening to all these people who are stimulating left and right brain thinking and their use of mind mapping?

They know exactly what their left and right brain side are doing. They understand that normal linear writing is very left brain oriented. And to improve our ways of managing our information and improving creativity, we need to use our right brain side as well.

This is great… until you see what they do next…

Most people look at mindmaps as being a nice picture of some information. They see the art of the map. The end result is an image. The end result is art.

Business people look at mindmaps as a cold/logical approach to visualizing all this information they have to deal with. They create the map using the rules and directions of mind mapping, or more in general visual mapping, and they simply create the map: Just follow the steps and you are fine…

The end result is an overview of the information. Sometimes it looks like a real image, often is it just a diagram of schematic overview.

I truly believe mind mapping is more than following the rules of mind mapping that Mr. Tony Buzan writes about in his books.

Before your weekend starts, I want to give you something to think about.

This is something that helps the more professional mindmap creator probably more than the beginners in mind mapping.

In fact… this is one of the human traits that limits the effect of mindmaps… a lot!

One of the most interesting things happens when people start to mindmap.

I tell my students to use more images when mapping their information. I let them know they need to make a nice picture of their notes. They learn to use different colors. And what happens next?

About 90% of them creates a map that shows words while using only one or two colors. Would you believe me that the first pen they usually use is blue?

Yes, habits are hard to break, even when you are doing it as conscious as possible :)

The quote above is from Alfred Korzybski, a Polish-American scientist and philosopher. It was first used in 1931. It tells us that the image we create of something or someone is not the object itself. It is only a derivative.

For instance: When someone is rude to you, your image of that person is that he or she is a rude person. This is not the case. It is only your perspective. The person is not rude. The behavior comes across as rude.

I train people in mind mapping and visual thinking for many years. I always advice my students to share their mindmaps with others. When you have other people review your maps, they will provide you with a lot of valuable feedback.

Most of the people who do regular offline training don’t bother about getting feedback. I have no idea why this is. My guess is that they either don’t use mind mapping that much anymore or they only create personal maps.

Either way, I believe they should share a map with a colleague or friend. It will help them increase their mapping skills.
