If you are like most people, you probably feel your memory is not that good. You can’t remember the names of people you just met and you have problems recalling phone numbers.
Thank God for paper and mobile phones to store the information!
Seriously, your memory is much better than you think it is.
We’ve discussed the capabilities of our brains before here. Today I want to give you two secrets which will help you in getting a very good memory. Not only your memory will improve because of these two secrets. You will lose weight, get a better body, earn more money and have a better relationship with your loved ones.
Although all of these areas of your life which might need improvement can be addressed using these two secrets, I only want to focus on the memory aspect.
During my training courses, about 80% of the students tell me their memory for names is poor. When I explain to them how they can remember nearly every name they hear… things change.
With only a little bit of technique and focus, they are able to recall 90% of the names they hear. In only a matter of a few minutes they can store and recall the names of about 25 people they’ve never met before.
You can probably imagine this boosts their confidence significantly!
Here is the first secret for improving your memory.
1. Learn the right technique, method and/or system
When you understand what you have to do, you are more than halfway there. Sounds easy, right?
Memory training is one very important aspect students don’t get in school. I should probably say that I am happy about this, because it offers me a way of training and meeting many people
.
When you think of it, it is kind of strange… You need to remember all that information, yet teachers won’t help you by telling you how to do that!
Only 1 in 20 people in my training courses has done some (in)formal training on how to use their memory.
I believe you should learn how to use your memory as well. Learn the systems, methods, tips and tricks to store and recall data. It is vital to use the right techniques. When you are ready to get your brain into shape, you should learn this from the best.
In my opinion, the person of our age who has the most impressive brain is Dominique O’Brien. He is the 8 times world champion of the Memory Olympics and record holder mentioned in the Guinness book of records (recall over 2800 playing cards in the correct order).
In short… he is the man!
I read his book “How to Develop a Perfect Memory” many years ago. For me, this still is the book to read. Unfortunately, it is no longer printed. Copies on Amazon are up to $600 (!!!). I wouldn’t pay this much money (although the book is worth is if you are seriously looking for ways to improve your memory).
I also purchased Mr. O’Brien his audio program. This also offers many powerful techniques.
When you have your techniques in place, you are ready to learn more about the second secret.
2. Take Action Until You Reached Your Goal
This is where most people fail. Sorry to give you the harsh facts, but that’s just what it is.
I’ve seen so many people ready to make massive improvements in their lives who stop right before the finish line. You may know the story of the man who dug for gold and stopped. The return was too low to continue. He sold his mine and broke even.
The new owner of the mine consulted an expert. The expert told him to dig just a little bit further. He found the biggest lumps of gold you can imagine!
Many people do the same. They have what it takes. They have the best techniques, the people around them who support them, everything they need.
Then… and I’ve seen this so many times… they only try once (at most) before they quit.
When you want to run a marathon, do you quit before you walked out of your house for your first training?
Do you quit during or after the first week of training?
Do you quit during the many months, if not years, you are moving towards your race?
Most people do!
I truly hope you continue to take action until you reach your goal. I have to admit that I’ve done this before as well. Now, I know when to stop and when to carry on. Training my memory was hard in the beginning. I could not see the progress I wanted. This was probably because I read so many wonderful stories about people and their memory capabilities. I wanted that as well!
There was nothing else to do than training more and more and more and more. And then… it worked!
You know, many times, it is best to stop before you start. This takes less effort and costs you the least amount of energy, resources and time. Only do this because you know it will not help you move forward in life and towards your goals.
An excellent and easy to read book is written by Seth Godin. I read this book in an hour or so and learned a lot about stopping with projects and how to focus better.
Never ever let the short term inconveniences be the reason you fail long term!
You should read his book as well.
Conclusion
When you are ready to move forward in life, always remember to use these 2 secrets:
- Understand and use the best techniques and systems
- Take action until you reached your goal
If you do this, you will be capable of doing amazing things!
