When I talk about mindmaps with people, most of them know what a mindmap is and what it can do for them. Unfortunately many people know but don’t use… (we discussed this earlier this week).
Right now I want to show you another angle for using mindmaps.
Mindmaps, or mind maps, are maps of information. That is how most people use them.
But you can also make them to reflect the ideas and feelings in your head! Here’s a nice example of how you can use this right now.
Create or draw a map regarding a situation which is bothering you. Or on something you don’t seem to get past (an issue that holds you back). Or you have an argument or discussion with someone which isn’t moving forward.
Use your map to outline all your feelings, thoughts and ideas.
The moment you do that, you can do a couple of things:
1. Step away from the map, and review it tomorrow. You create distance between yourself and your topic and you will most definitely have a clearer point of view on this topic tomorrow.
Also, when you look back at the map, you are not the same person anymore. You, and the person who created the map, are two (slightly) different persons. This will help you to see things differently and find a solution faster.
2. Re-arrange the map as you have it in front of you. Take the main topics and make these subtopics in new branches. You completely change your point of view this way.
3. Give the map to someone else and have them explain what the problem is or what you try to bring across with the map. Do they see things the same way you do? Probably not! Mainly because they are a different person who value other things in life. That is very good, because it shows you that there is not just one way of looking at things, people and situations.
When you use this method, you will get a more objective point of view which in turn helps you to grow and move beyond your issue or problem.
There you go, you can now use your map not just as a map of your information, but also as a tool to create clarity in your life!
Use this wisely… you might never know what positive things it will bring you!
