The Start Of Something Beautiful

Did you ever start doing something and before you knew it, you were working on something else than the goal? I can assure you… we all know this (some people better than others).

The problem is that you get ’sucked into the activity’ and you don’t really know where you are heading. The only thing you do know is that you should finish your current task.

Many people know this, most don’t take action to make it stop.

You and I have an advantage.

We know how to make mindmaps. We know and, even better, we USE this knowledge.

The solution is really simple. You create a mindmap of what your goal is and you outline what you do in this map.

Please understand this… the map you are about to make doesn’t have to be a perfect traditional mindmap. In fact, it could be something that I refer to as a practical mindmap. The map is only a tool. You don’t need to spend a lot of time creating the map. You should spend that time working on reaching the goal itself.

(this is IMPORTANT: Most people try to procrastinate their way into achieving their goal. This doesn’t work that well – own experience…)

Generally, I spend about 5 minutes (tops) creating the map. It could even be 1 minute or less!

This includes getting the information in the map, organizing it into a good overview, prioritizing the tasks and creating clear (sub) goals.

When that is done, I start to work. The map is my actual ROAD MAP. It helps me to move forward.

Combine this with Parkinson’s Law (Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion) and you are good to go.

In fact… I think you will amaze yourself and the people around you!

Yes, the mindmap or visual map is the start of something wonderful when reaching goals.

BUT… MAKE SURE YOU MOVE FORWARD.

My question for you is:
How do you use mindmaps in project management (or just when you want to reach a goal)?

I look forward to reading your answers.

Dear Arjen,
I started something beautiful by implementing your mini mindmap course in my workshop. After some breakdowns I started my new profession as a trainer. One of the tools I use is mindmap for creating balance in different areas of your life. I explained the steps by taking your online course and the participants followed the steps; result ….. they got the insights. I stand for effortlessly living in abundance with joy for each & everyone. With mindmaps all 3 parts (abundance, joy & effortless) are taken care of.

Thank you for your contribution to me as a trainer.
