Yesterday we discussed different solutions for mind mapping while on the road. When I read the article again, I noticed something that could help you in becoming a more effective mind map creator.
The moment you are ready to use your time more effectively to create mindmaps, I want you to continue reading.
Creating Practical Mindmaps While Saving Time
You are probably by now using mindmaps as a practical tool. Hopefully I was of assistance to you in becoming a more pragmatic mindmapper.
One thing I can’t emphasize enough is that you should become and continue to be a practical person who uses mindmaps to move forward in life.
I worked with many smart people. Some of them even created mindmaps. Others were more or less creating visual overviews.
One of my biggest shocks came when I saw a person who I worked with create a mindmap.
She did not just create the mindmap. She started to add her main topics to the map (that is the first level of the map). When she did that, she immediately started to change font sizes, colors, add images, etc. The result was a nice looking map of… nothing.
Really, there was nothing in there but a few first level words.
At first, I thought her method was to get in a brainstorming mode by adding the colors and images.
But no… nothing. The map was all colorful and nice and then she stopped. No words were added. She said that she had to start thinking now.
OK… it could be that by now her head was getting filled with thoughts. And this would be added to the map.
Nope, only staring and outlining the map again.
Very disappointing to say the least.
I was wondering how this person could have ever created the powerful overviews she showed me and her clients before…
Now, how will this help you in becoming a more effective and practical mindmapper?
The Solution
When you use the information we discussed yesterday, and you combine this with everything my friend did, you find the solution.
She was distracted by the bells and whistles of the tool she was using. Consciously, she would probably not admit this. Subconsciously, she just wanted to create something nice
. Perhaps, it was even a way for her to procrastinate.
The solution is simple, powerful and something we discuss in the FOCUS training in the Mindmaps Unleashed Membership Program as well. I shared this solution with her.
She had to remove the distraction. Just remove the feature of making a ‘beautiful’ map.
We did this later on and the results were truly amazing!
She finished a map in about 10 minutes. Everything important to her and this topic was included. The map didn’t look that impressive, the content was dynamite!
The next time you want to create a map and you want to SAVE TIME, and GET THINGS DONE…
- Create a mindmap on paper. Use only one pen/color
- Create a mindmap on a mobile phone solution. These don’t have too many features and help you focus on what you want to do: capture thoughts!
After that, you can make the nicest and more impressive visual overview you want. Add colors, images and more. But start with the basics – INFORMATION!
Enjoy your next mindmap session!
