What is the best piece of advice you can give a person to become successful?
I was listening to a Brian Tracy presentation. He said that people know everything they need in order to be successful. During a training he once did, he asked everybody in the audience to write down their piece of advice so he could create a booklet for all attending.
His thought that we all know what we need to be successful is so true. I know so many things to be more successful than I am right now. I speak with many people who all know what they need to do to be more successful.
Do you know what the sad thing is?
These individuals who know it all don’t act upon what they know. I believe most people are like this. We all have the knowledge of being incredibly successful, yet only few are ‘chosen’ to be really successful in life.
You obviously saw that I quoted the word chosen. The fact that you become successful has little to do with luck, although it is really nice if life gives you a break once in a while
.
Immediately after receiving the ‘what is your advice’ idea planted in my head, I stopped the tape and wrote down what to me are the keys in becoming and being successful.
The third success key for me is what I will share with you today. The other two are given later in this series.
Success key #3: TAKE ACTION!
I believe it was Napoleon Hill who said: DO IT NOW. This is so true! We should take action and do the things we should do (in stead of procrastinate).
Into our own visual mapping world
Let’s bring this into our world of visual thinking and visual mapping.
Taking action does not stop after you created your map. This is only half the steps you need to take. You should USE the map. That’s what I’ve been telling you all along since we met at MindmapsUnleashed.com.
I spend a lot of time with very bright people. People I truly respect and admire. They are masters in their fields of expertise. The only sad thing is this:
They didn’t create the lasting and powerful results they could have created. There is one, and only one reason for them being there and not yet being super successful in what they do:
They went only halfway.
They CREATE but they don’t USE.
Think about it.
- When you write a book but you don’t publish it, will it inspire many people?
- When you are the best in what you do, but you don’t share this, will many benefit from it?
- When you are very bright but you can’t focus on what you (should) do, will you make it?
Probably not.
I sometimes feel really sad for these people. You probably have these kinds of people around you as well. Before, I really thought: what if I had their skills/talents, where would they take me then?
Right now, I know that by knowing half of what they know and taking action like they don’t, I will be moving forward even faster.
Here’s my advice for you:
Write down what your advice to a person will be who wants to be successful?
Here is the thing which will change your life right now.
Start applying your own advice in your own life.
Don’t just KNOW. ACT! You owe it to yourself. Become more successful than you were yesterday or last week. APPLY WHAT YOU KNOW!
3 Steps For Immediate Action And Positive Results
- Write below, in the comments field the advice you will give a person who asks you the question: How can I become more successful in life?
- Ask other people what their advice is for becoming a successful person.
- Use your OWN advice and tips your receive from others.
I look forward to learning from you!

Those are some great thoughts Arjen! We’ve had some similar thoughts about success and effectiveness and talents, etc. and have actually come up with a mind mapping product to help vizualize and communicate those strengths. Now, we’re looking for some mind mapping folks to help us with the beta testing. We’re looking for a few good Mind Mappers for a Beta Test of a new personal development and team building Add-in for Mind Manager 8.
–You Get Great Software at No Cost
The beta test will require you to download and install a Mind Manager 8 add-in which will then appear on your Mind Manager menu (along with your other add-ins if you have them). As part of the beta test you will receive a free download of the software add-in along with the best selling book “StrengthsFinder 2.0” or “Strengths Based Management”. These items have a total retail value in excess of $200, but you’ll receive them at no cost to you in exchange for your careful participation in the beta test. We estimate that the entire beta test, including experimenting with your new software and filling out the feedback survey will require approximately 3-4 hours of your time.
–You’ll Actually Enjoy the Process
Of course we’re a little bit biased, but we think you’ll find the process interesting and informative. The software add-in is designed to graphically identify and create a mind map for your top five personal strengths as well as build teams of people to work together according to the strengths needed for a particular project or objective.

Hi Craig,
Very interesting to see your usage of mind mapping. It would be great to test your product and share experiences with the rest of the mindmaps unleashed community.
On-the-money! There is a human tendency in learning a new
skill to think (Intellectualize) about WHY? and WHAT? makes
the skill work, while simultaneously trying to internalize (make a habit)
of the new skill.
No-good, we create mental-conflict (cognitive-dissonance) by
combining thinking with doing. First learn Mind Mapping skills,
second, the Why? and What Keyword Elements to use.
When we are trying to reproduce Mind-Mapping,
the step-by-step strategies of constructing the M.M.
– we are learning by Observation, we are an Apprentice.
When we are dividing our mind by Analyzing-Synthesizing (Overview)-Summarizing to create the KeyWords, we are
separating our mind between left-brain (hemisphere) and right-brain.
How? Left-Brain is intellectualizing (thinking, deductive
and inductive analysis). Right-Brain is Pattern Recognition,
making an “algorithm” one-step-at-a-time.and step-by-step.
using the KeyWords as a pattern for understanding.
Coda: Separate (divide Form from Content), don’t combine
doing and thinking about the Keyword elements of MindMapping
until you Master it all. Learning requires separating Procedural
Memory from Semantic (cognitive) memory.
